Prince William's girlfriend Kate Middleton is to celebrate Christmas Day with the Royals for the first time. She will join the party at Sandringham and stay overnight before taking part in the traditional Boxing Day pheasant shoot with the Queen, Prince Philip and Prince Charles.
William will then drive from the Norfolk estate to Berkshire to visit 23-year-old Kate's parents, Michael and Carole, at their home.
But there will be no Sandringham stay for Prince Harry's girlfriend Chelsy Davy, 20.
Harry is expected to jet out for a break in the sun with his South African sweetheart soon after Christmas Day before returning to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst for his final term on January 9. William will start his army career a day earlier.
Yesterday, author Ingrid Seward, who wrote the biography William And Harry, said Kate's invitation was very significant.
She said: "I think she and William are in a serious relationship but nobody's rushing to marriage. I believe courtiers are a bit more worried about Harry, though.
"He is madly, madly in love and he may rush in and do something a bit rash."
Ms Seward said Kate, who will be the first Royal girlfriend to spend Christmas with the Royals since Prince Edward introduced Sophie, faces "an ordeal".
She said: "The Royals share lots of in-jokes nobody else understands and talk about people nobody else knows. Then there is Prince Edward, who always runs some ghastly disco.
"I remember the Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson, when she was dating Prince Andrew. She tripped over the corgis and found the whole thing terrifying."
Although Chelsy will not be there at Christmas Prince Charles has warmed to her. She was invited to stay at Highgrove, Gloucestershire, for the first time, last weekend The pair, who first started dating 18 months ago, hadn't seen each other since they took a holiday in Botswana in September.
But it is Kate who has been most accepted by the Queen. In the summer she was invited to have dinner with the monarch and the Duke of Edinburgh for the first time.
The date at Balmoral Castle was also the first time Kate had been invited inside the Deeside castle - though she and William have stayed many times at Tam-na-Ghar, the prince's hideaway cottage, since they started dating in 2001.
A Clarence House spokesman said: "The boys will be spending Christmas at Sandringham but we will not comment on whom may be joining them over the period or what private arrangements they may have."
Ms Seward added: "Only very serious Royal girlfriends are invited to Sandringham.
"It is a sign you are entering the inner circle and Kate going this year is certainly an official acceptance of her position, importance and role in William's life."

Prince William, equally at home on a remote farm or in a busy office, spoke yesterday of how he has enjoyed life in the City after completing his three weeks' work experience.
He made the comments as Clarence House released a series of photographs of the Prince, looking smart in suit, shirt and tie, taken during his time with HSBC, the bank.
Prince William works with Simon Williams at Lloyd's of London
"I now have a much better understanding of how all the different financial institutions work and how they fit together," said Prince William, 23.
"Spending every day with people who contribute so much to this country's economy gave me the chance to experience the atmosphere of the City and to see, as best as I could, what it's really like to work there. And I won the stock-picking competition!"
Prince William's placement with HSBC included visits to several of the City of London's most famous names, including the Bank of England, the London Stock Exchange, Lloyd's of London and Billingsgate market, where he learnt about the regulation of the fish trade.
The Prince's placement ended on Friday, three weeks after he turned up an hour late for his first day at work because of a traffic jam.
Prince William, who will go to Sandhurst to train as an officer in the New Year, was based at HSBC's charities investment services team.
Over the past three months he has worked on a country estate to learn more about land management and made a number of visits to the homeless charity, Centrepoint, of which he is patron.
Paul Cattermull, the senior director of charities services at HSBC, said: "William learnt a great deal about our sector as well as the City at large and, I hope, really enjoyed his time with us."

CELEBRATIONS FOR THE QUEEN'S OFFICIAL BIRTHDAY
The Queen's official birthday will be marked on Saturday, 12 June by the annual ceremony of Trooping the Colour.
This colourful military ceremony is carried out by troops from the Household Division (Foot Guards and Household Cavalry) on Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall, watched by The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, members of the Royal Family, invited guests and members of the public.
The event is a popular spectacle in central London, watched by thousands of spectators. A procession of carriages and horses travels from Buckingham Palace up the Mall to Horse Guards Parade. During the ceremony, The Queen is greeted by a Royal salute and carries out an inspection of the troops. After the massed bands have performed a musical 'troop', the escorted regimental colour is carried down the ranks. The Colour this year will be trooped by 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards.
The Foot Guards and the Household Cavalry then march past The Queen, and the King's Troop, Royal Horse Artillery, rank past. The Queen travels back to Buckingham Palace at the head of her Guards, before taking the salute at the Palace from a dais. The troops then return to barracks.
Just before 1pm The Queen and members of the Royal Family make an appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, to greet the crowds and watch an RAF fly-past.
Timetable
The Royal procession will leave Buckingham Palace at 10.45am, proceeding down the Mall to Horse Guards Parade.
The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh will ride in a carriage, followed on horseback by HRH The Prince of Wales (Colonel, Welsh Guards), HRH The Princess Royal (Gold Stick in Waiting and Colonel, The Blues and Royals) and HRH The Duke of Kent (Colonel, Scots Guards). Also riding in the procession will be The Master of the Horse, The Lord Vestey, and the Colonels of the Irish Guards, the Life Guards and the Coldstream Guards.
The ceremony of Trooping the Colour will begin on Horse Guards Parade at 11am.
At the end of the ceremony, The Queen and the procession will return to Buckingham Palace, where The Queen will take the salute from a dais.
At 1.00 p.m. Her Majesty will take the salute from the balcony of Buckingham Palace at a fly-past of Royal Air Force aircraft.
Access
Access to Horse Guards Parade is by ticket only, issued by London District (Ministry of Defence) in February 2004. Members of the public can view the processions from and to Buckingham Palace along the Mall, and view the fly-past from the area around Buckingham Palace at 1pm.
Media access to fixed positions for the Trooping the Colour ceremony is through the London District Press Office.
History
The Sovereign's birthday is officially celebrated every June by the ceremony of Trooping the Colour. Although The Queen was born on 21 April, it has long been customary to celebrate the Sovereign's birthday publicly on a day in the summer, when better weather is more likely.
The ceremony dates back to the early 18th century or earlier, when the colours (flags) of the battalion were carried (or 'trooped') down the ranks so that they could be seen and recognised by the soldiers. Since 1748, this parade has also marked the Sovereign's official birthday and, since Edward VII's reign, the Sovereign has taken the salute in person at Trooping the Colour. The Queen has taken the salute every year of her reign, except in 1955 when a national rail strike cancelled the event.
Birthday Honours List
A list of honours for meritorious service is announced on the Sovereign's official birthday. Since The Queen confers honours on the advice of the Prime Minister, the list is published by the Prime Minister's Office and can be viewed on the web site of Number 10 Downing Street.
